If follow-up treatment is necessary due to under-correction or over-correction, patients have two options. One is for the surgeon to free the edge of the original corneal flap, lift it open, and then re-treat with the laser. The other option is to cut an entirely new flap and retreat the cornea with the laser. Preference varies among surgeons and partly depends on the amount of time that has elapsed since surgery. The more time that has elapsed since the initial surgery date, the more likely it is that a new flap will need to be cut.
